Learning “In The Gaps” and On The Go – Using Dead Time

We live in a waiting society. Wait at the doctor. Wait in line at the supermarket. Always waiting in a fast paced demanding world. Technology is giving us a leg up on using that dead time to learn something, and we’re jumping aboard the mobile learning train.

With the advent of smartphones, PDA’S and other reading devices that range from the size of a small ipod to the larger Kindles from Amazon, you can now order, download and read learning material to use WHILE you wait for some other task. It’s pretty amazing when you think about how you can harness the power of waiting to learn what you want to learn when you want it.

You can take advantage of the large (100’s of thousands of book titles) available for the various smartphones and PDA’S on various platforms, including the Kindle and the new Ipad, or you can avail yourself of some of the new material produced specifically for learning on the go. No doubt there will be more material coming from other vendors but here’s what WE are doing and will do.

We’re Stepping Up To Mobile

Our helpcards are perfect for adaptation to on the go learning because, unlike long books, they pack a huge quantity of information, tightly written, into a very small number of words. This is important for on the go learning where your learning will probably be somewhat episodic. That means that you won’t be reading the material in long “sittings”, but you are more likely to be reading in much shorter “standings” of a few minutes at a time.

Helpcards are set up in small chunks and bullet points, perfect for consuming one concept or point at a time as you wait for something else. So, we are adapting our helpcards for use on mobile devices such as the Ipod, Iphone, Blackberry’s and most PDA’s and on and the Kindle. We’ll be porting over most of our helpcards over the next few weeks. Try one out. It’s a nifty way to use time more effectively.

While technology allows us to learn anywhere and anytime by reading, listening or watching on mobile devices, when is enough enough?

Is there a point when we should be saying: This isn’t the time or place for more learning. I’m just going to stand in this line and enjoy myself by being present?

    I think there is.
