Bacal’s Law: The only people who can be fooled by statistics…

…are people who are ignorant about statistics.

There’s an old saw that goes: There are lies, damn lies and statistics, implying that statistics can be manipulated to “prove anything”. Not true.

The only people who can be fooled by statistical manipulation are those that know nothing about statistics and/or research. If you possess the knowledge, then you know what questions to ask, and how to interpret the answers.

So, whenever I see someone talking about how it’s so easy to manipulate statistics, I know that they simply don’t know much about statistics in general.
